From Papyrus to Samizdat

Jewish Texts and Ideas Festival

The last two years the Eshkolot project not only gives lectures and seminars, but also advances special culture of reading through formats study group and comment-party. In a counterbalance modern to «fast consumption» books we offer the principle of «slow reading» (conformable to the movement Slow Food), deriving inspiration in traditional Jewish practice of studying of sacral texts to which analytical reading, joint reading and reading as the comment is peculiar.

On March 7-10, 2013 in St. Petersburg with the assistance of Chair of the Jewish culture of St.Petersburg State University will take place the fourth Festival of slow reading «From the papyrus to a samizdat» , devoted to interaction of the text and its material carrier (the manuscript, rare printing editions, possessory records, epitaphs, etc.) Besides seminars of «slow reading» the program of the Festival includes visit of unique library collections, archives and museums .

Each participant will be able to choose one of four streams devoted to different eras: from a bible antiquity until the end of the XX century. Along with lectures and seminars of scientists from Russia and Israel the extensive cultural program (excursions, music, cinema) will be offered participants.

The payment for participation in the Festival for inhabitants of St. Petersburg makes 3000 rubles, including the training program and a food. For inhabitants of other cities the contribution makes 1000 rubles (including accommodation and a food), but the road to the destination and back isn't paid. To students granting 30% of a discount is possible.

Due to the limited quantity of places, organizers reserve the right of selection of participants on the basis of provided information and personal interview. Final confirmation will be dispatched no later than February 15.

Application for participation in the Festival, requires not later on February 10, 2013 to fill online questionnaire .
